Beschreibung:

Gisborne, W., D.D. AN INQUIRY INTO THE PRINCIPLES OF NATIONAL ORDER: with Reflections of the Present State of the Christian World, and Probable Causes of War, and the Best Means of Promoting and Securing the Future Peace of Europe. To Which are Prefixed, Two Tracts Written by Edward Earl of Clarendon, on the Subjects of War and Peace. London: Printed for M. Allen and James Wallis 1798. Small 8vo, full tree calf, 211pp. We found this title listed in "A Catalogue Numerical & Alphabetic, of the books in the Subscription Library at Hull...," 1805. It is listed as item 889, "An inquiry into the principles of national order, by W. Gisborne, D.D." There is no listing in WorldCat, Library of Congress, or any library we could find. Likewise, there does not seem to be any information on the author (there is a William Gisborne who was Colonial Secretary of New Zealand, but he was born in 1825). Most searches also find Thomas Gisborne DD, (1758-1846) an Anglican priest and poet, who might have been related, but at least appears to be a contemporary. Thomas Gisborne was strongly associated with the Clapham Sect, an abolitionist group. While it is uncertain about W. Gisborne's affiliations, he does have a long section of this book that is anti-slavery, just after his history of English Methodism and the history of Charles Wesley. The other volume in this lot is a reference book. Entick's New Spelling Dictionary Teaching to Write and Pronounce the English-Tongue with ease and Propriety....With a List of Proper Names of Men and Women. The whole Compiled and Digested in a manner entirely new, to make it a Complete Pocket Companion... Wilmington (Del.), Printed and sold by Peter Brynberg, 1803. 24mo (5.225 x 5.5 in.), full leather, 460pp. Condition: First: Previous owners' notes (many of them) on free endpages and verso of half-title. Scattered foxing with occasional minor water stains. Toning of endpapers (pastedowns and free), but the text block has little other than the page edges. An approx. 1 x 3 in. piece cut from upper margin of last page, not impacting any text. Second: Overall toning of pages, scattered foxing. Signature with pp. 195-202 separated, heavily frayed along edges, but present. Wear to head and foot of spine. Overall a bit rough. Previous owners' names front and back free pages.
