ENGLISH CHARTERS. A collection of twelve charters (grants and indentures), circa 1290-1440, referring to Ellerton in Yorkshire (5) and Epperstone and Langar in Nottinghamshire (5 and 2), all manuscripts on vellum, in Latin (9) and in French (3), various sizes, 55 x 232mm - 270 x 268mm , nine with seals pendant from vellum tags (and one seal, detached). The collection includes: [Edward I]. 'Anno d[omi]ni M CC nonag[esimo] nono' [1299], Maria de Wassingburne 'Domina de Thornetonstiwharde' (i.e. Thornton Steward in Wensleydale), selling her holdings in the manor of Ellerton to Harsculph de Cleseby for 'duos solidos [et] sex (?) de[na]rios'; 10 Edward I [1305], Matheu de Wassingburne granting Harsculph ('Harsquy') de Cleseby two areas of woodland in the manor of Ellerton; n.d. [late 13th- or early 14th-century], 'Domina Sibilla de Torneton' contracting with Harsculph de Cleseby to exchange two areas of woodland in the manor of Ellerton; n.d. [late 13th- or early 14th-century], Galfr[edus?], confirming Harsculph de Cleseby's holdings and rights in the manors of Ellerton and Tunstall; 5 Edward II [1312/13], an indenture for John Sampson, for property at Epperstone; 39 Edward III [1366], Sir Richard le Strop (?) granting privileges to John Underwode of Ellerton; 40 Edward III [1367]; 47 Edward III [1373]; 8 Henry IV [1402]; 11 Henry VI [1433]; 18 Henry VI [1440]; and undated (15th-century), all referring to Epperstone or Langar. The lot also includes CHARLES II, King of England (1660-1685). Document signed, a warrant addressed to John Howe Esquire, Brussels, 20 July 1659, appointing him colonel of a regiment of horse, with the power to levy 500 horses, on vellum, one page, 78 x 200mm , papered seal; and [James I], an indenture, 30 June 1608, between George Marlow, parson of Epperstone and James Bulmer for the lease of property, on vellum, one page, 245 x 490mm.
