Emblemata Alciatus A Emblemata Alciatus A [Emblemata]. Alciatus, A. Emblemata. Lyon, M. Bonhomme for G. Rouillé ("Guliel. Rovilium"), (p., title and dedic. leaves within woodcut borders, (of woodcut emblematical ills. and of trees all attributed to P. ESKRICH, all within woodcut borders by "P.V." (= P. VASE = P. ESKRICH), late 18th cent. chintz paper wr. - Lacks w. (p. supplied in neat reproduction); some occas. vague staining ( w. darker brown inkstain), a few sm. marginal tears and tear; title-p. cut sl. short in outer margin, sl. affecting the woodcut border; old owner's entries on (verso of) title-p. Chintz wr. w. some neat repairs. = One of the most complete Latin editions of Alciatus' Emblemata. Alciatus wrote the emblems as epigrams for his humanist friends and sent a selection of them to his friend Peutinger at the court of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg. They were first published under the title Emblemata by Steyner at Augsburg in Alciatus' consent. The Emblemata of Alciatus is regarded as the first emblematic book ever and according to Mortimer "set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature". Rare.
