Alciatus wrote the emblems as epigrams for his humanist friends and sent a selection of them to his friend Peutinger at the court of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg. They were first published under the title Emblemata by Steyner at Augsburg in Alciatus' consent. The Emblemata of Alciatus is regarded as the first emblematic book ever and according to Mortimer "set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature". Rare.
