Beschreibung:

EMBLEM BOOK. ALCIATUS, ANDREAS. Omni... emblemata cum commentariis, quibus emblematum detecta origine, dubia omnia, et obscura illustrantur. Adiectae novae appendices nusquam antea editae. Per Claud. Minoem. Paris (in officina Ioan. Richerii sumptibus Francisci Gueffier) 1608. 8:o (163x104). (48, including engraved title), 1-968, (30, last blank) pp. Engraved title, 213 emblematic woodcuts within light borders including the series of trees. Contemporary vellum, worn and spotted, cracks in the joints, spine in six compartments, damaged in lower part, red edges. Some marginal dampstaining at end. Minor foxing. Partly overwritten signature in upper margin of title. Photo. Title-page engraved by J. de Weett surrounding a portrait of Alciatus. Alciati's work on emblems set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature. The combination of allegorical pictures and epigrams - called "Emblems"- appearing originally (and for nearly 100 years afterwards) under the name of Alciati (1492-1550) established an enduring fashion in moral symbols, and this singular category of illustrated books exerted a strong influence on both contemporary literature and fine art. Our edition was edited by Claude Mignault (first ed. 1571) with appendices and enlarged up to 213 emblems.
