ELIOT, THOMAS STEARNS. Poems. Richmond: Printed & published by L. and V. Woolf at The Hogarth Press 1919. 8vo, original wrappers of a blue burlap-like fabric backed with paper, paper label printed in red on front cover, a little worn at extreme upper and bottom edges of the covers; half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, one of fewer than 250 copies, FIRST STATE of text and label, PROBABLY A TRIAL BINDING (certainly at least a variant binding not noted in Gallup or Woolmer); the covers of this copy measure 22.7 x 14.4cm. (9 x 5 3/4in.), slightly smaller than the measurements given in Gallup and in Woolmer. "For the binding of the earliest copies printed papers of varying texture and design were used with the red-printed label. Later copies are bound in marbled paper wrappers, with insides of plain or wall-paper design, the majority with the black-printed label"--Gallup A3; Woolmer, Hogarth Press 4. This fragile pamphlet was hand-printed and hand-bound by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. They experimented with different wrappered bindings for this, their fourth publication, but this burlap-like fabric apparently proved to be impractical. Provenance : Jonathan Goodwin (sale, Part III, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 12 April 1978, lot 618).
