(61.0 x 50.8 cm), presented in the original portfolio box. Condition: Light scattered foxing/staining to title page and mounts. N.B. Eliot Porter's love of photographing the natural world began in his childhood when he took pictures of birds around his family's homes in Winnetka, Illinois and Great Spruce Head Island, in Penobscot Bay, Maine. After receiving a degree in medicine, Porter turned to photography in the 1930's, encouraged by his brother, artist Fairfield Porter as well as photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams By 1939, Porter began to create color photographs offering a new perspective to more accurately show the marvelous detail and astounding beauty of nature. He challenged the black-and white standard of the medium, creating dye-transfer prints, a meticulous process in which each color is transferred by hand. Over the course of his career he produced twenty-five books and traveled extensively to ecologically significant locations both within the U.S. and throughout the world.
