Title: Elegant Extracts. Poetry, Prose, & Epistles - with 18 fore-edge paintings Author: Place: London Publisher: John Sharpe and Hector McLean Date: c.1810 Description: 36 volumes in 18. Illustrated. (16mo) 13x8.5 cm (5¼x3½") 19th century full polished plum calf, wide floral border and wreath and lyre center emblems in gilt, spines gilt, red morocco labels, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom two-shelf bookcase with locking glass-paneled door (with key), green faux-marbled painted finish, "Temple of the Muses" in gilt at the top of the door. Each volume adorned with a lovely fore-edge painting of a scene in the English countryside. Views identified as: Wallingford, Berkshire; Hurley, Berkshire; Tong Castle, Shropshire; Lacy House, Middlesex; Brough Hall, Yorkshire; Danson Hill, Kent; Aylesford, Kent; Erith, Kent; Greta Hall and Keswick Bridge; Shaugh Bridge, Devon; Dartmouth Castle, Devon; Lee Abbey, Lynton; Castle Hill, South Molton; Kitley House, Devon; Teignmouth from the Ness; Appelby-in-Westmorland; Brough Castle, Westmoreland; and Hereford from the River. A charming set in all aspects, from the purpose-built case, to the fine bindings, to the wonderful fore-edge paintings. Lot Amendments Condition: The finish to the case appears to be of a more recent vintage; spines a bit sunned, some light wear, early owner's name in each volume; light foxing; very good.
