.45/.50 caliber. 33.5" octagonal barrel lengths. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish with brass and German silver stock fixtures. Walnut stock has a straight grip and no forearm. Percussion over/under rifle with notch and blade sights. Stock features many German silver geometric escutcheons including hearts, octagons, triangles, and other oblong fixtures to both sides. Stock also has carved bone inlays depicting a fish, leaf, cheek rest, and one seemingly newer inlay that appears to be carved like a basket, all to left side. Item features a triple pierced patchbox with regional motif. Lockplates are both signed LONDON and show simple scroll engravings. Barrel is signed W. OGDEN/OWEGO, N.Y. to top. Included with item are a ball puller and ramrod, both carved from single pieces of wood. According to Database of USA Gunmakers, W. Ogden was most likely Walter Ogden of W. & C. Ogden gunmakers in Owego, New York. Walter and his brothers, Charles and Jehiel, were known as prolific gunmakers during the percussion period. Gunmaker Abe Williams worked for the brothers during the 1860's, and eventually took over the company sometime in the late 19th century. Condition: Fair. Bores are dark. Finish has darkened appearance due to patina, with small clusters of pitting and surface oxidation overall. Wood stock has scratching and mars overall. There is some brass on patchbox that has come loose, and fish inlay has indentations, possibly natural grain from bone or antler material. Action is functional.
