EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. & MAMIE Archive of correspondence with Edward Lane of the Pond's Extract Company, 1949-60 . An archive of personal correspondence comprising approximately fifteen typed letters signed from Dwight D. Eisenhower these including four letters signed as President on White House stationery and others from before his presidency on either Columbia University or personal stationery, a few sent from the SHAPE headquarters Europe. The letters signed in full, initialed "DE," or signed "Ike E" (3 examples), most with original mailing envelopes; also present are approximately fifteen items from Mamie Eisenhower, including several autograph letters signed, signed typed notes, signed and unsigned Christmas greetings, etc. Usual folds, some toning and creasing, generally well preserved, one letter with some handling creases, some browning to one presidential letter, a few related items and clippings included. This correspondence between Pond's Extract executive Ed Lane spans the period when Eisenhower was President of Columbia University, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and President of the United States. Most of the letters are cordial in nature but reflect a friendship that included frequent visits and gift exchanges, and, of course, golf matches at Augusta. Of note is a 1956 letter signed as President in which Eisenhower reports: "In truth I expect the American people to realize that I have done the best I can for each segment of society, in its total relationship to the whole, and that, if I am re-elected, I shall continue to do so." Also of note is a letter of thanks upon election in November 1952 signed "Ike" (the nickname Eisenhower would not sign as once President), a 1954 letter on personal stationery inviting Lane to "an informal stag dinner ... I shall probably wear black tie." Lastly, a 1952 letter from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe thanks Lane for news from Augusta, including improvements made to the 11th hole in advance of The Masters. "I would give most anything to to be able to make a personal investigation of those changes," Eisenhower reports from Europe. C
