EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed (“A. Einstein”), to Moritz Schlick, Oxford, 18 May 1932.
EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed (“A. Einstein”), to Moritz Schlick, Oxford, 18 May 1932. “I saw—with astonishment and admiration—Rutherford’s laboratory up close” A fine letter, combining Einstein’s visit to the great Ernest Rutherford, his humanitarian concern for his fellow scientists during the Depression, and his ongoing work on the Unified Field Theory. The letter reads: “Because of my stay in Oxford, I got your letter very belatedly—it was sent here after me. To send a telegram seemed very tasteless. So, after some reflection, I decided to write a letter. In this [letter,] I praised the American public spirit, and the sense of responsibility that reveals itself in such donations, and recommended — not to found a house, but salaries, since that was more important just now. I’m sure you’ll agree with me. Hopefully the letter will arrive all right and meet with success! After many false starts, I seem to be on the right track in my scientific research, not least due to the excellent collaboration of my dear Viennese, Willager…” In the postscript he adds: “I saw—with astonishment and admiration—Rutherford’s laboratory up close, both its apparatus and its capabilities.” The year 1932 was a landmark one for Rutherford’s Cavendish Laboratory. His colleague James Chadwick discovered the neutron, and his students John Cockroft and Ernest Walton advanced a step further down the road to nuclear fission by splitting the lithium atom with a proton bombardment.
