EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1965). 'Ist die Trgheit eines Krpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhngig', offprint from Annalen der Physik , 4. Folge, Bd. 18, 1905. Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1905. 8 (220 x 140mm). Original orange printed wrappers (slightly separating at spine, repaired tear in front wrapper). Provenance : presentation copy from the author to Ernst Mach (front wrapper stamped 'A. Einstein berreicht vom Verfasser'; Mach's library dispersed 1950s through Antiquariat Ackermann, Munich). PRESENTATION COPY TO ERNST MACH OF THE FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT ISSUE. Here, in his second paper of 1905, Einstein explores the relationship between the loss of kinetic energy and the emission of radiation energy, concluding that 'the mass of a body is a measurement of its energy content' (DSB). Einstein's mass-energy researches found their complete expression two years later in his famous equation E=mc 2 . Einstein acknowledged the influence of Mach on his own, particularly his early, work. He wrote Mach's obituary and in 1918 he developed a 'Mach principle' on general relativity. According to Einstein's biographer, Ernst Weil there are few offprints of Einstein's publications before 1914. Boni, Russ & Laurence, Einstein Checklist , 10.
