EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his eldest son, Hans Albert, with a postscript also signed to his son Eduard, n.p., 13 June 1919, 1½ pages, 4to (some browning to upper half of verso). FACING HIS MOTHER'S DEATH. Einstein expresses delight at the prospect of seeing his son in Zurich, at the beginning of July, and promises to bring 'the photographic plates in which your childhood is immortalised'. His doctor will not permit him to go on an actual walking tour ('he thinks I will not get the right grub'), although his health in general is much better, but they should be able to find a place to stay in the hills, or perhaps go sailing. Einstein's mother [Pauline Einstein] is fatally ill in Lucerne: 'She will certainly die within six months and suffers terribly'. The next payment of Mileva's allowance will be delayed by foreign exchange problems. The letter goes on to respond with pleasure to Hans Albert's remarks about sailing, music and schooling ('I didn't have much time for history either ... But it is certainly interesting in itself to know what men did in earlier times'. A postscript thanks Eduard for his letter, which says 'everything that is important'; and he sends good wishes for his birthday. Einstein's mother, Pauline, did not in fact die until February 1920, coming to Berlin to spend her last few months with him.
