Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his younger son, Eduard ('Tetel'), n.p., 22 December 1929, one page, 8vo , pencil numbering '1316' on verso, erased pencil markings to recto. Provenance : Eduard's Einstein's older brother, Hans Albert; and by descent. 'DON'T TAKE LIFE SO SERIOUSLY'. Einstein has heard through his friend Heinrich Zangger that Eduard is feeling miserable, and responds with a warm invitation ('Wie es auch sei, komm zu mir her und sprich Dich aus'), speculating that Eduard is as little suited to digesting 'medicinal fare' as Einstein himself was. In any case, Eduard should not take it or himself too seriously: 'nimm es und Dich nicht gar zu wichtig, wie man es leicht thut, solange man jung ist'. Eduard was at this stage (aged 19) apparently contemplating a career as a doctor. Zangger, a professor of forensic medicine in Zurich and an old friend, often played the role of intermediary and mediator with Einstein's Zurich family.
