19TH CENTURY
Eight netsuke and two ojime 19th century The first ivory, of a recumbent rat, inlaid eyes, signed Masanao ; the second ivory, of a seated demon biting a fly-whisk; the third ivory, of a karashishi sitting on a drum, seal; the fourth ivory, of a Hannya mask; the fifth ivory, of a puppy with one paw on a ball, signed Mitsutsugu ; the sixth ivory, of Benkei seated in a large horagai (conch-shell) and blowing a small conch-horn with trailing tassels; the seventh ivory, a two part manju -netsuke in guri -style with a design of stylised scrolls; the eighth a two part manju -netsuke in red lacquer inlaid with mother-of-pearl depicting a fisherman; the ninth hornbill, of oval shape depicting a cicada sitting on branches of double-gourd; the tenth horn, forming a rectangular box and cover, decorated with various lacquers depicting three immortals, signed and seal in rectangular mother-of-pearl Shibayama and Taizan ; the eleventh an ivory ojime decorated in different lacquers depicting toys; the twelfth a plain red coral ojime Sizes ranging from 1 cm. to 4 cm. high (12)
