7 cards by Louis Herman Heller (1839-1928), all with ids., copyright notice 1873, & statement, I certify that L. Heller has this day taken the Photographer of the above Modoc Indians, prisoners under by charge. Capt. C.B. Throckmorton, 4th U.S. Artillery, Officer of the Day. I am cognizant of the above fact. Gen. Jeff. C. Davis, U.S.A., published & by Watkins Yosemite Art Gallery, San Francisco; dated reviews verso. Portraits include Schonshin & Capt. Jack in chains, Jack's family, Bogus Charley, and One-Eyed Dixie; AND 1 cdv of Wi-ne-ma, (also called Toby Riddle, wife of Frank Riddle, a Modoc interp.) Card carries R. A. Lewis N.Y. studio imprint verso. In 1870 some Modocs fled their reservation. The Army's attempt to return them in 1872 failed. During a peace conference April 11, 1873, Winema warned Gen. Canby that trouble was brewing. Canby failed to take the warning seriously and was murdered by Capt. Jack. The Modocs then hid and fought in the lava beds, finally surrendering in June. Six men including Jack were convicted and sentenced to hang. Provenance: Ex George Hart Collection Condition: Excellent.
