EDWARD VI, King of England (1547-1553)]. Privy Council document addressed to the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer, signed by Thomas Goodrick, the Lord High Chancellor, as Bishop of Ely ('T.Ely'), the Bishop of Winchester, the Earl of Bedford, the Earl of Suffolk, Sir John Gates, Sir John Masone and Sir Richard Wotton, Westminster, 8 April 1553, 3 pages, 4to , on a bifolium, integral address panel (trimmed in lower margin, touching 7 words). A warrant listing thirteen officers of the household of Anne of Cleves with the arrears of sums owing to them, and ordering payment. 'You shall delyver to Sir William Candish [i.e. Cavendish] Knight Treasurer of His Majesties Chamber the said sum of three hundred and twenty-six poundes, thirteene shillings and four pence to be by him payed over to Thomas Charde, servant to the Lady Anne of Cleves, granted according to a warrant dormant directed to the saide Sir William for the payment of the wage of her offycers'. Anne of Cleves (1515-1557), the fourth Queen of Henry VIII, consented to the annulment of her marriage after only a few months in 1540. After Henry's death her status as divorced Queen was diminished and her relations with the Privy Council were marred by her frequent complaints about her need for more money, despite the generous terms of the divorce settlement. Under Edward VI some of the pensions due from the Crown to her servants fell into arrears, as described in the present document, including 'Thomas Charde at £xx fee unpayd for a year and three quarters at Our Lady Day laste £xxxv'.
