(Edward, surgeon and pioneer of smallpox vaccination, 1749-1823) Autograph Letter signed to "Madam" [probably Mary, Lady Inglis], 4pp., sm. 4to, St. Georges Place, [Cheltenham], 8th April 1811, "as soon as I became perfectly satisfied that the Vaccine Discovery was in every way complete, I began to turn my view to India, & made several efforts to introduce the new practice there, by sending the matter to with ample instructions to the Medical Men at the different Presidencies. However from the length of the voyage, or want of practice among those into whose hands it fell, it was ineffectual. My friend and pupil Dr De Carro of Vienna soon after availd himself of an opportunity of sending it to Constantinople, & by renewing it at different stations as it pass'd on, it at length reach'd Bombay in a state of perfection. Dr De 's meritorious services claim'd the attention of the East India Company, and they were notic'd by a pecuniary present. This gave me peculiar pleasure as no one... has labor'd more to spread vaccination over the Globe... . Now... my point. How came it to pass that the second person concern'd in this important business should have been honord with attention and not the first? For I must observe that the had the matter from me... . The advantage derivd from the universal adoption of Vaccination throughout the Companys Settlements in India are represented to me as immense. Millions have been already saved from an untimely Grave... by the ravages of the Smallpox. As I mentioned to you in our conversation on the subject it is not the munificence of the Hon.ale Company I presume to solicit but some mark (should I be thought deserving of it) of their notice...", folds, foxed and browned, exceptionally browned at tail by sunlight but still legible and strong; and a 19th century engraved portait of Jenner, v.s., v.d. (2). *** Jenner's plea for recognition by the East India Company of the effect of his smallpox vaccination in India. Provenance: Purchased in 19th century by Sir Richard Thorne Thorne (1841-99), physician and public health officer; and by descent.
