EDMUND BLAIR LEIGHTON (1852-1922) A PICNIC PARTY Signed with initials and dated E.B.L. 1920, oil on canvas 54.5 x 83cm. Provenance: From the artist to Louis Wolff & Co.; consigned for sale from the family of an Irish clergyman. Literature: Documented in Edmund Blair Leighton's personal records, put together from documents and letters of the estate. * The setting for this painting is in near Kirby Cane, Norfolk, along the river Waveney. The artist's summer home was in this area and both the river and the Norfolk countryside appear regularly in his paintings. Picnics were enjoyed by the Blair Leighton family and the artist did paintings of this subject multiple times, once c.1902, again in 1910, and in this later 1920 picture. We are grateful to Kara Lysandra Ross for her assistance with the cataloguing of this picture. It will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonne of Leighton's work.
