Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Condition : first few plates torn at fold; edges of binding rubbed. Osborne pp. 215-216. [WITH:] The Instructive Picture Book. Or Lessons from the Vegetable World [by Charlotte Yonge]. Edinburgh: Edmonston & Douglas, 1858. Folio (12 7/8 x 8 3/16 inches; 327 x 208 mm). 31 hand-colored double-page plates "arranged by Robert M Stark". Original pictorial boards. Condition : first plate separated at inner fold; edges worn, spine chipped. Osborne p.843. [AND WITH:] The Instructive Picture Book. Lessons from the Geographical Distribution of Animals or The Natural History of the Quadrupeds which characterize the principal divisions of the globe. By M H H J. Edinburgh: Edmonston & Douglas, 1860. Folio (13 x 8 1/4 inches; 330 x 210mm). 60 hand-colored plates. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Condition: several marginal tears and repairs, K1 with longer tear; binding rubbed, edges worn. Cf. Osborne pp.825-827 (1867 second edition only). a rare complete set of this beautifully illustrated series : the first title above is the first volume in the series (this example the fourth edition "with many new illustrations": the first edition was published in 1857). The second title is a first edition of volume 2 in the series, with a handsome series of floral and vegetable plates captioned in English and Latin. The third title, devoted to quadrupeds, is also a first edition. The text is irregularly paginated (often following plate count).
