Peter Behrens Sein Werk von 1909 bis zur Gegenwert, signed presentation copy from Behrens, photographic portrait frontispiece, plates (some folding, 1 colour), illustrations, contents just beginning to separate, most ff. a trail of faint damp-staining at extreme upper edge, a little faint finger-soiling, residue and staining left by removal of label from front pastedown, hinges with superficial splits and pulling a little, original gilt cloth, some soiling, Essen, G.D. Baedeker, 1928. *** Peter Behrens (1868-1940), architect and designer; of unique importance in the genesis of modernism; author of the founding principle of the Deutscher Werkbund, namely, to educe the beauty of the practical, the functional, and the quotidian; pioneer of the use of design for the creation and dissemination of an entire corporate identity; among those apprenticed to him were van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Meyer, and Gropius. The inscription reads: "Mariessa. mit herzlichem Weihnachtsgruß. Peter Behrens Wien 14.XII.29."
