Original publisher's black cloth, covers decorated in blind, spine gilt-lettered (front hinge cracked, some wear to spine extremities and corners). Provenance : Alexander Hamilton Tilton (presentation inscription on the blank leaf preceding title, presumably in the hand of the recipient: "Alex. H. Tilton, from, the 'Author.' 1876") -- Charlotte Atkinson Kimball (signature dated 1895). FIRST EDITION OF THE PRINCIPAL WORK OF THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MOVEMENT, with the leaf of errata and the text uncorrected (except for a few manuscript corrections). PRESENTATION COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BOOKS WRITTEN BY A WOMAN. Alexander Hamilton Tilton was Eddy's brother-in-law. "The essence of Mary Baker Eddy's philosophy is that the Eternal Mind is the source of all being, that the duality of mind and matter is an error. There is no matter and, hence, 'disease is caused by the mind alone'. Science is the wisdom of the Eternal Mind revealed through Jesus Christ" (PMM 363). Presentation copies of Science and Health are SCARCE: only a copy of the 1878 second edition appears in American Book Prices Current within the last 25 years. Grolier American 78.
