East Indies, St Helena, Australia and others Journals of voyages of Anthony P. Allen, 1826-1845, initially as midshipman but eventually as captain, on trading voyages for the East India Company and others, with a number of illustrations including depictions of Napoleon's grave at Elba, of Sydney and other scenes, in five volumes, 4to , comprising: Vol.1: Voyages mainly for the East India Company, 1826-1832, Marchioness of Ely to Madras and Bengal, Duke of Roxburgh to Bombay and China, 1831, and Town of Ross to Quebec, 1832, illustrated with approximately 32 sketches of topographical and local scenes of Madras, Calcutta, China, Quebec and St Helena, including TWO VIEWS OF THE GRAVE OF NAPOLEON, and four of Longwood House, also 12 views of ships or on-board life (including vigorous scenes of 'Neptune's Ceremony' and of 'The Midshipman's Mess on board the Honble Cos Ship Marchioness of Ely', and a depiction of the Ely on fire at sea), and three charts and a technical drawing showing Allen's device for a temporary replacement rudder during a storm in the North Atlantic; Vol.2: Voyages, 1833-36, on Town of Ross to West Indies and Mauritius, and on Oriental to Hobart, Sydney and Bombay, illustrated with 8 topographical sketches, including of the 'Monument to DeLaperouse at Botany Bay', and 5 of Mauritius, 5 depictions of ships, and 2 of flora and fauna; Vol.3: Voyages, 1838-39, on Magistrate to New South Wales and Java, illustrated with 7 topographical views, including one 'View of Botany Bay and Monument to Le Perouse', and one chart; Vol.4: Voyages, 1839-42, on Magistrate to Bombay, illustrated with 3 topographical drawings, a depiction of a fish, two charts and a technical drawing; Vol.5: Voyages, 1843-45, on Mary Anne to West Africa (island of Ichaboe), Bombay and Madras, illustrated with 5 topographical and local drawings, one depiction of a ship, and 3 charts and plans; a number of printed charts and scenes, and newspaper cuttings are interleaved, as well as a group of letters addressed to the author's brother Henry Allen in Dublin; (covers generally worn, and Vol.2 covers detached).
