Lot of 8 newspapers from early-to-mid 19th century. One particular issue of note is a 1805 issue of the Universal Gazette which contains a printed letter from American explorer, Meriwether Lewis. "I have but little doubt we will be fired upon by the Sioux," writes Lewis, "the have pledged to us that they will not yield, while there is a man among them who is living." Despite foreseen setbacks Lewis, wrote optimistically to President Thomas Jefferson about the journey ahead, "We do not calculate on completing our voyage within the present years...you may therefore expect me to meet you at Monticello in September of 1806." Clarke did not make it to Monticello in September of 1806. He did; however, reach St. Louis that same month and year. Other newspapers include an 1804 copy of the Boston Gazette reporting Napoleon Bonaparte the Emperor of France; the March 1825 edition of the Niles Weekly Register with a scathing letter from Andrew Jackson while he was a general to Henry Clay; a November 1832 copy of the same paper announcing the election of Henry Clay as President; an 1845 Evening Mirror and 1848 copy of the Freeman's Journal with special interest pieces contain pearls of 19th century wisdom; an 1816 copy of The Weekly Reader newspaper printed in Chillicothe, OH; finally, a 1806 paper The Repertory which discusses "western affairs" in the Ohio territory. Condition: Toning and brittleness of the margins and folds of the newspapers.
