Objektsbeskrivning EARLY STUDY OF AURORA BOREALIS. MAIRAN, J. J. DE. Traité physique et historique de l'aurore boréale. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1733. 4to (250x185 mm.). (8), 281 pp. 15 engraved plates, partly folding, by Simonneau (complete, some browning and minor foxing). Contemporary full calf, slight wear, boards slightly warped, richly gilt spine in compartments, red and black title labels, some damages to upper part of spine, worn label, the red one probably renewed, red edges. Text with some slight spotting and foxing, some pages browned. Bookplate of Martin Hogstadius, and bought by him at antiquarian book store Rosenkilde og Bagger Antikvariat, Copenhagen in 1962. First edition of one of the first studies of the aurora borealis by Mairan (1678-1771), French mathematician, astronomer and geophysicist, member of numerous scientific academies. Mairan's scientific work includes contributions to the theory of heat, observations of meteorological phenomena, and theoretical work on the orbital motion and rotation of the moon. A second edition was published in 1754.
