1p, 6 Mar 1861, New York. Note to E.D. Peters that he is pleased that the picture of his lady is satisfactory and that he had received the check for $33.50. Charles DeForest (C.D.) Fredricks was born in 1823. Almost as soon as the technology arrived on these shores, Fredricks began training with Jeremiah Gurney In 1843, he sailed for Angostura, Venezuela, where he photographed the city. He traveled to many other locations in South America, selling his images upon his return. In 1853 he moved to Paris where he opened a studio. He became the first photographer to produce life-sized heads, hiring colorists to add life-like qualities. He rejoined Gurney in New York for a short period. In 1858 Frank Leslie described Fredricks' studio when he lit a huge arch 60 feet across with hundreds of lanterns spelling "Fredricks Photographic Temple of Art." C.D. continued in business until 1889. He amassed a portfolio of everything from city views of both North and South America and portraits of famous people - performers (including John Wilkes Booth), politicians, military men. Fredricks died in 1894. Condition: Folds as expected. Otherwise excellent.
