Early Namikawa enamel, Meiji period: A cloisonne enamel vase of bombe form decorated on the blue ground with clouds and scattered cherry petals with large reserves of fan and floral form, the foot and rim in bronze, 8.5cm high; a cloisonne enamel vase of globular form with a cylindrical, slightly flaring neck, the body with scrolling karakusa on a black ground between pale blue diaper borders, the foot and rim in polished bronze, 12.5cms high; a Cloisonne Enamel Bowl attributed to Honda Yosaburo, of shallow, circular form decorated within the well with a Ho-o bird within a border of floral reserves, the exterior with scrolling floral designs on a mottled red ground, the foot dark blue, rim and footrim in bronze, 12.3cm diameter Other similar examples of early works attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and are illustrated in "Japanese Cloisonne: The Seven Treasures" by Gregory Irvine, V&A Publications 2006, Pls 30 and 34. These were made at an early stage of the Namikawa artists' experiments, both technologically and artistically, in the medium of cloisonne enamel, apparently not always to the Master's satisfaction as it was not long after the period in which these pieces were made (1870-80) that Yasuyuki dismissed the entire workforce and started all over again!
