Title: Early Days in San Francisco: The Days of Old, The Days of Gold, The Days of Forty Nine. Scenes Familiar to Every Pioneer. A Limited Edition Only Author: Knapp, E.B., publisher Place: San Francisco Publisher: E.P. Knapp Date: Description: 22 albumen photographs of engravings and lithographs, mounted on both sides of 11 thin cardboard leaves. Interleaved with plain paper leaves to which are glued typed descriptions of the images. Images approx. 12x19 cm (5x7½"); album is 27x35 cm (10½x13¾"), cloth lettered in gilt "Early Days in Frisco." Rare album, undoubtedly produced in very small number, with photographs of original prints and engravings of San Francisco from its infancy of 1848 through the second Vigilance Committee in 1856. Affixed to the front pastedown is a two-page list of "The Vigilance Committee of 1851," with some 177 name, which however "does not comprise very member of that committee..." At the rear pastedown is a shorter list of members of the 1856 Vigilance Committee, with the executive committee, police officers, etc. The photographs of prints include Mission Dolores in 1848; San Francisco in 1848; the city in October 1849 and 1850; the city and harbor from Fremont and Harrison Streets; the Great Fire of May 4, 1851; the mass meeting of citizens of June 11, 1851; the hanging of Whittaker and McKenzie; the execution of Casey and Cora; etc. The typed descriptions are quite detailed and interesting. Not in Cowan or Rocq; not copies listed in OCLC/WorldCat. There is a pencil inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper, "A Rare Find. John Buckley #108 McAllister St. San Francisco Cal., Octo. 8th, 1898" (there is a tear to this page through the lower part of the inscription). Lot Amendments Condition: Spine perished, covers coming loose, corners worn; occasional soiling within, some fading to images; overall about very good. Item number: 256489
