E. Howard No. 74 Astronomical Regulator with Gravity Escapement, E. Howard Clock Company, Boston, c. 1874, 12 1/2-in. painted zinc dial inscribed E. Howard & Co. Boston, Mass., subsidiary dials for hours at the bottom, seconds above and minute track around the perimeter, four-legged gravity escapement single train movement stamped E. Howard & Co. Boston, jeweled gravity arm arbors, lifting arms and locking faces, maintaining power and stainless steel replica single jar mercury pendulum, regulating assembly and suspension block, powered by a single side hung lead weight all mounted on a cast iron backboard bracket in an oak case with removable hood and sides, ht. 59 1/2 in. Note: With a long history in Waltham, this clock is likely one used in the Howard factory from new until early in the 20th century. Inside the great wheel under the maintaining power disc is the following inscriptions by E. Howard Company escapement finisher Mr. L. P. Emerson: L.P.E. 1874 Cleaned 1884 L.P.E. Put up in Supt. Office 1892 L.P.E. Cleaned 1900 - new wire 1902.
