ca 1775 in the Amsterdam style, with silvered raised chapter ring with black Roman numerals, signed Johannes Just. Asmus Alkmaar. Engraved brass cut-out center with raised silvered second hand dial above center with cut-out for dial showing day of the month in Arabic numerals, flanked by two cut-out dials with engraved silver months in English (left) and in Dutch (right), each with different figure representing a different constellation with month and day of month, left or Nordic Gods/Goddess, right with appropriate one for each day of the week. Painted phase of the moon dial below center on interior of chapter ring with arched moon phase of the age dial above. Below the chapter ring is a lovely painting of classically-dressed, seated lady with arm resting on celestial globe and hand with pointer at open book on astronomy, in garden setting with cherubim playing with various astrological implements with landscape in background. Two brass sleeved, weight driven works with one iron bell above a smaller brass bell (Dutch striking), original weights and pendulum. Case is rosewood and mahogany with all-over fine inlay in satin and other exotic hardwood. Bonnet with removable stepped pediment, topped with carved figure of Atlas holding the earth on his shoulders in old gold repaint, inlaid with vining floral and with cut-out brass scrollwork over white linen, which covers sounding holes, over arched top with carved keystone bust of George III (English king) flanked by carved laurel branches and turned finials on plinths, inlaid quarter columns with cast brass capitals and plinths. Waist with hourglass form door, bordered by carved bellflowers with vase at base, with fine inlaid waist length portrait of George III over cast brass window surround of Father time, flanked by cornucopia and scrollwork and basket of flowers surmount, sides of waist with beautiful inlaid floral panels. Base in Bombay form with stylized carved claw front feet, front panel with elaborate inlaid bowl of fruit with two butterflies hovering above, sides with acanthus leaf and branching flowers, all in old possibly original finish, 114" high. Note: the Atlas figure was made to be played as top finial or on top of the keystone bust figure on bonnet. Condition: Some shrinkage with resulting cracking of veneers and inlay, turned finials are replacements, overall VG to VG+. We do not guarantee working order of clocks.
