[Dutch] DOLENDO, Bartholomeus Willemsz. After Michiel Cocxie The Holy Family. Amsterdam, Claes Jansz. Visscher 1605-Engraving, 22,7 x 28,7 cm, laid paper with watermark (crown: Heawood 1034), signed in the plate at lower left corner "Michiel Cocxy inven. / Dolendo fecit". Interior with Virgin Mary and Christ as a child seated at centre, surrounded by two women with several children, two men beyond, St Joseph standing at left. Based upon a composition after the painter Michiel Coxcie. Despite the artist's long career and reputation, not many prints were made after his works. The present engraving is a rare testimony of the reputation of Cocxie in the early 17th century. Bartholomeus Dolendo (1571-was a gifted printmaker, trained in Goltzius' workshop. With two lines of engr. calligraphic Latin text at lower margin. A very good dark impression of the 3rd and final state. With full margins. Ref. Hollstein V:6.
