DURANTI, Guillelmus. Rationale divinorum officiorum. [Cologne: Zel, ca 1475]. Chancery 2 o (285 x 208 mm). Collation : [1 4 2-48 1 0 ]. 471 leaves (of 474; lacks 31/4.7 and last blank, first gathering bound in at end). 35 lines and headline, double column. Gothic type 2:115. 2 to 6 line initial spaces rubricated in red, large opening initials in red with reserved decoration on black penwork ground with penwork infill and marginal extention, other initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. (Light worming and staining mainly at beginning and end, 38/1r stained.) Contemporary German blindstamped calf over wooden boards, brass clasps and catch plates, knotted vellum index tab (rebacked, most of the wooden boards exposed, one catch missing). Provenance : early ink marginalia -- Leander van Ess (1772-1847), 19th-century book collector (ownership inscription pasted to front free endpaper) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles, 1 August 1941) -- donated to SMS 29 August 1941. First printed by Fust and Schoeffer at Mainz in 1459, presumably the eighth edition and the first Zel edition. An indispensable handbook to the symbolism of the Church ritual, both spiritual and physical. This edition comes from the press of the first Cologne printer.
