Drawn on Stone by L.Haghe, Esq., Part I [all published], the set of 3 lithographed plates by Louis Haghe after W.W.Young, all proofs on india paper and mounted, the first two plates marked 'Proof', light marginal soiling and water-staining but not affecting images, first plate frayed at fore-edge and the last with small tears to fore-edge (all repaired), resewn in the original buff printed wrappers, a little soiled, a few stains to lower wrapper, preserved in modern limp cloth portfolio with reproduction of upper wrapper (smaller) mounted on upper cover, [cf.Abbey, Life 412, with different upper wrapper; Haskell 1531; Not in Ottley], oblong imperial 4to, Bristol, Philip and Evans, 1840. *** The upper wrapper of the Abbey copy ("c.1835") varies with the title (within a decorative architectural border) reading "Part I. Illustrations of the Great Western & Bristol & Exeter Railways. Prepared from actual Survey, by W.W.Young Engineer. With Letter Press Descriptions. Twelve Shillings. Subscribers' copy. Dedicated by Permission to the Directors of the Great Western & Bristol & Exeter Railway Companies", no imprint or date. This copy omits Young on the wrapper and describes Haghe as "lithographer to the Queen" rather than the King as on the plates, with "Proof Impressions on India Paper, Price Five Shillings" and with imprint of Philip and Evans of Bristol, 1840. Both issues are extremely rare.
