Three-quarter length portrait of Paul Miki (Osaka 1564-Nagasaki 1597) depicted with the instruments of his martyrdom. A Japanese Jesuit, he was crucified with 25 other Catholics during the persecution of Christians under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruler of Japan in the name of the emperor. He was beatified in 1627 and canonized in 1862.
