Dowdney (George, active 1730-50). Elizabeth Pitt & Ann Pitt, together a pair of portraits, each oil on canvas, the first a half-length portrait depicting a grey-haired lady wearing a silver-grey silk gown, titled upper right ‘Mrs. Eliz. Pitt. March ye 20th. 1736’, sometime re-lined and discreetly restored, 76.5 x 63.5cm (30 x 25ins), gilt moulded frame, the other a half-length portrait of her younger sister Ann wearing a deep blue silk gown, sometime re-lined and discreetly restored, 75.5 x 63cm (29.75 x 24.75ins), gilt moulded frame. Provenance: By family descent. Elizabeth and Ann were sisters of Reverend Christopher Pitt (see previous lot). Elizabeth married William Goldwyer of Somerford, Steward of Christchurch. Their youngest daughter Martha married Reverend James John Talman. Ann died unmarried. (2)
