Vintage print from the year of publication of Lange and Taylor's explosive American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion (January, 1940), the photobook that documented the Dustbowl emigration of Okies to California and complemented Steinbeck's novel of the previous year, The Grapes of Wrath. Lange and Taylor were married in 1935—their bond so telling in this image—and proved a formidable team in documenting the ecological as well as human devastation wrought by capital.
