Doniphan Author: Hughes, John T. Place: Cincinnati Publisher: U. P. James Date: [1847] Description: 144 pp. Illustrated with 8 wood-engraved vignettes including one on the title page; wood-engraved frontispiece; 3 wood-engraved map plans, including Santa Fé, Battle of Brazito, and Battle of Sacramento. 9x5¾, 19th century half green calf and marbled boards with original yellow printed wrappers bound-in at the end (wood-engraved vignette on the front cover), two gilt-lettered red morocco spine labels, spine tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers. First published in 1847 in a very small edition, of which only five copies are known; this undated edition was likely published after 1854. "Doniphan's and Kearney's conquests gave the United States its claim to New Mexico and Arizona, finally acquired by the Gadsen Purchase" - Howes H769; Streeter Sale 165; Wagner-Camp 134:6.
