DONI, Antonio Francesco (1513-1574). La Zucca . Venice: Francesco Marcolini 1551. 3 parts in one volume, 8° (166 x 105mm). General title within large woodcut border, 3 woodcut vignettes to section titles, 3 woodcut tail-pieces, 2 woodcut portraits and 21 woodcut illustrations, some full-page. (Occasional light soiling and waterstaining, part II with a1-a2 shorter at outer margin and tear to bottom margin of E3-E4 with minor loss of a few letters.) Contemporary limp vellum, shelf-mark label on spine (front joint split and lacking two stitches, some soiling). Provenance : ink and pencil shelf-mark and annotation on title -- Compagnia del Gesú (book label and stamp).

The architectural border on the title is from a model introduced in Florence in 1550 by Lorenzo Torrentino with arms and devices of Cosimo de' Medici: the Zucca figures are in poses copied in reverse from the Torrentino border. The work is divided into three parts: I cicalamenti della zucca del Doni , Le baie della zucca del Doni and Le chiachiere della zucca del Doni . Adams D-835A; Brunet II, 812; Mortimer Italian 164.
