DOLET, ETIENNE. Dialogus, De Imitatione Ciceroniana, adversus Desiderium Erasmum Roterodamum, pro Christophoro Longolio. Lyons: Sébastien Gryphius 1535. 4to, 199 x 143 mm. (7 7/8 x 5 5/8 in.), eighteenth-century red morocco, covers gilt-panelled, spine gilt, olive morocco lettering-piece, g.e., lower cap restored, covers a trifle bowed, upper inner hinge weak, soiling to title, small marginal dampstain to first few leaves, faint trace of green wash coloring to title device and initial on a2r . FIRST EDITION, roman type, shoulder notes in italic, printer's woodcut device on title, different gryphon device on verso of final leaf, woodcut 11-line initials with cherubs, etc., two smaller white on black ?metalcut initials. Baudrier VIII, p. 88; BM/STC French p. 138. Not in Adams, Rothschild, Brunet. RARE. Etienne Dolet (1509-46) began his printing career three years after the publication of this dialogue defending the Ciceronian cult against Erasmus, whom he attacks in vehement terms, which was followed the next year by his greatest work, the Commentariorum in linguae Latinae . Dolet's inveterate quarrelsomeness and a sarcastic tongue that earned him numerous powerful enemies undoubtedly contributed to his terrible fate, as the only printer to be burned at the stake for heresy and related transgressions. Provenance : Jacob Joye, seventeenth-century signature on title -- M. Wodhull, ownership inscription dated 25 August 1770, with bibliographical and purchase notes on front flyleaves -- Paul Voûte, of Amsterdam, monogrammed booklabel (sale, Paris, 9-11 March 1938).
