FIRST EDITION, roman type, shoulder notes in italic, printer's woodcut device on title, different gryphon device on verso of final leaf, woodcut 11-line initials with cherubs, etc., two smaller white on black ?metalcut initials. Etienne Dolet (1509-46) began his printing career three years after the publication of this dialogue defending the Ciceronian cult against Erasmus, whom he attacks in vehement terms, which was followed the next year by his greatest work, the Commentariorum in linguae Latinae . Dolet's inveterate quarrelsomeness and a sarcastic tongue that earned him numerous powerful enemies undoubtedly contributed to his terrible fate, as the only printer to be burned at the stake for heresy and related transgressions.
