DODOENS, REMBERT. Stirpium historiae pemptades Sex. Antwerp: Plantin-Moretus 1616. Folio, 347 x 224mm. (13 5/8 x 8 7/8 in.), nineteenth-century quarter calf, worn, spine defective, upper joint split, upper cover loose, title slightly soiled, a few small stains, occasional discoloration . Engraved title, 1309 WOODCUTS OF PLANTS, eight-line and smaller ornamental woodcut initials, Plantin's woodcut device on verso of final leaf. Second Plantin edition of Dodoens's final and most comprehensive work, incorporating all the many changes and additions made to his original herbal, the Cruÿdeboeck . John Gerard's great Herball is virtually a translation of the Pemptades . Nissen BBI 517; Pritzel 2350; Ahumada 38. Provenance : A few early marginalia; J. R.
