DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge (1832-98)] (ie. "Lewis CARROLL"). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, London: Macmillan and Co., 1866 [1865]. 8° (193 x 130mm.). Half title, wood-engraved frontispiece and illustrations by John Tenniel. (4 leaves cleanly torn, one tear affecting an illustration on p.141, some light mainly marginal staining.) Original red cloth gilt by Burn, the upper cover with a triple rule in gold and a small central illustration of Alice holding a pig within a triple rule circle, the lower cover the same except with a picture of the Cheshire Cat, pale blue endpapers, gilt edges (ink stain on spine and edge of upper cover affecting spine lettering, smaller ink stain on lower cover, joints and corners lightly rubbed, a little fraying and some very light staining, a few signatures detaching). Provenance : "Edwin Francis Wade from his affect. Papa, after the Measles, 1866" (inscription on half title). SECOND [FIRST PUBLISHED] EDITION. Avery 7; Gumuchian 1061: "the preferable light blue endpapers"; Osborne I, p.335; Williams, Madan, Green 33: "It is uncertain whether it comprised two thousand or four thousand copies." "The first printing of Alice -- it comprised two thousand copies -- was ready in the latter part of June 1865. The events thereafter have become legendary. Tenniel was dissatisfied with the printing of his illustrations, and he wished them to be done over. Carroll agreed that the book should be reprinted. Accordingly, the entire edition was withdrawn before publication and disposed of, in a different form, in America. A new, improved edition was published, with which both Tenniel and Carroll found favor this time" (Gerald Gottlieb Early Children's Books and Their Illustration (New York, 1975), p.233.
