Phantasmagoria and other poems by Lewis Carroll
London: Macmillan, 1869. 8vo (6 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 168 x 115 mm). Original gilt pictorial cloth, g.e., later cloth box. Condition : light marginal staining to the last few leaves; binding lightly rubbed. Provenance : G. Denman (presentation copy inscribed by Dodgson to the "Hon[ora]ble G Denman" with the author's "kind regards" dated "Jan. 1869"). presentation copy of the first edition, first state with no mention of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" on the title. Denman was an English jurist and his enthusiasm for this work is recorded, along with a mention of this particular copy of the work, in Stuart Dodgson Collingwood's biography "The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll" , (pp. 136-138). In addition to the inscription there is also a 5-word holograph revision in the final Canto (p.56) of "Phantasmagoria" which is apparently in Dodgson's hand. The additional markings in blue pencil appear to have been done by Denman. Lewis Carroll Handbook 68.
