[early 1870s], in disguised handwriting, one page, 8vo (light soiling). A fake invitation, composed for the benefit of the Drury sisters: 'Dear Mr Dodgson, I hope you will be able to come to our Garden Party on Friday afternoon, Yours truly, Victoria R'. Dodgson was something of a social climber, and made a number of attempts to penetrate royal circles, having some of his photographs shown to Queen Victoria in 1860 by Lady Augusta Stanley (though she declined the opportunity of keeping any). The non-acquaintance also formed the basis of squibs, as when he described to a child friend his declining the Queen's request to have a photograph of him: 'Mr Dodgson presents his compliments to Her Majesty, and regrets to say that his rule is never to give his photograph except to young ladies'.
