Housed in a clamshell box. Condition : foxing, map tissue-backed; worn. Provenance : J[ohn] Kunckel (signature); later signatures. “In publishing the Philadephia Directory for 1797, Cornelius W. Stafford had [Stephens’] map renewed through an almost identical plate cut by Joseph Bowes … Naturally the title ‘Stephens’ was omitted; but the more important distinguishing feature of the replacement map is its identification of the new United States Bank under construction” (Snyder). The early owner of this copy, John Kunckel, is listed in the directory as a shopkeeper on North 2nd Street. Evans 32868; Snyder, COI 151; Spear, p. 275.
