DIOPHANTUS OF ALEXANDRIA (fl. 250 A.D.). Rerum Arithmeticarum Libri sex -Liber de numeris Polygonis seu Multiangulis . Translated from the Greek into Latin and edited by Guilelmus Xylander (Wilhelm Holtzmann, 1532-1576). Basel: Eusebius Episcopius and the heirs of Nicolaus Episcopius, 1575. 2 o (308 x 205 mm). Collation: * 6 ; a-m 6 n 4 . 82 leaves, paginated. Printer's woodcut device on title, woodcut diagrams in text. (Some browning and staining throughout.) Modern vellum (bowed). FIRST EDITION OF THE GREATEST MATHEMATICAL WORK OF LATE HELLENISM. Of the thirteen books referred to in the introduction to the Arithmetica only six survive. They present a collection of both determinate and indeterminate problems, which are treated by algebraic equations and by algebraic inequalities. Diophantus introduced symbolism into algebra, named powers up to n 6 , and delved extensively in the solution of indeterminate equations, founding the branch of algebra known now as Diophantine analysis. Xylander's translation and commentary had a demonstrable influence on Simon Stevin and Franois Vite. VERY RARE. Adams D-652; see Smith p. 348 note; Norman 641.
