DIONYSIUS Periegetes (fl. 124 A.D.). De situ orbis, sive Geographia . Translated from Greek into Latin verse by Priscianus. Commentary by Joannes Camers. Vienna: Hieronymus Vietor and Johann Singriener for Leonardus and Lucas Alantse, 11 November 1512. 4° (201 x 153 mm). Collation: a 6 b-k 4 . 42 leaves. Roman type, text with commentary surround. Title within woodcut architectural border surmounted by two putti with birds, dated at the top 1512 and signed with an A pierced by an arrow, woodcut white-on-black initials, publishers' woodcut device at end. (A few foliation numbers shaved, title soiled and with small paper repair in lower margin, catching woodcut border, k4 slightly discolored, occasional very minor dampstaining to upper margins.) 16th-century limp vellum, covers stamped in blind with large cartouche block of strapwork and arabesques on an azuré ground (rebacked in modern vellum). Provenance : contemporary marginalia; "Wolfgangi Dyssbachen presbyteri et canonici veteris capelli ...", effaced 16th-century inscription on title, "duplum" mark in upper corner of title. Rare Viennese edition of Dionysius Periegetes's didactic verse description of the known world, written in 1187 hexameters. Priscian's late classical translation was a free metrical adaptation in 1087 verses, with a few passages borrowed from other sources. Both his and the humanist Antonio Beccaria's prose translation enjoyed great popularity during the Renaissance. This is the first edition of the commentary by Johann Camers, who also wrote a commentary on Solinus. BM/STC German , p. 244.
