Type 1:113R. 7- and 9-line initial spaces, most with guide letters, shoulder notes. Translator's name supplied in an early hand to headings on 1/2r and 1/4r. (Slight worming to first 16 and last 4 or 5 leaves, first leaf slightly stained and with a few filled marginal wormholes, last leaf with several filled wormholes and inner hinge strengthened, the translator's name preceding the colophon corrected by an early hand and again in modern ink.) 19th-century vellum gilt, smooth spine gilt with red morocco lettering-pieces (upper inner hinge cracked). Provenance: Hercules Silva, 19th-century inkstamp on 1/3r. FIRST EDITION in Latin of the extant portions (the first ten books and other fragments) of Dionysius of Halicarnassus's history of Rome from its beginnings to the First Punic War. The translator Lapus Biragus of Milan (the suffix "Flor[entinus]" was erroneously added to his name in this edition) states in his postscript that he based his translation on two manuscripts from the library of Pope Paul II (1464-71), to whom he dedicated his translation. The translation was probably carried out in the year 1469, as the papal archives record that Paul II paid a scribe to make a copy of a manuscript of Dionysius during that year. This edition was the first dated book to issue from the itinerant printer Celerius's Treviso press, his third, set up after brief printing stints in Venice and Padua. He printed only a few books at Treviso (Goff and Hain-Copinger list 4) before returning to Venice at the end of 1480. At least six variant issues of the colophon and the paragraph preceding it have been recorded, but no priority of issue has been established. The colophon of the present copy corresponds to British Library copy IB. 28412b (Goff variant b). In the preceding line the translator's name has been altered by erasure and rewriting, first in an early and then, superceding those corrections, in a modern hand; the original reading, however, appears to have been "LAPPVS BIRAGVS FLOR.", as in the same British Library copy.
