Sermons from Advent to Easter, and three treatises, in Latin, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Germany, 14th-century] 208 x 150mm. 142 paper leaves: 1 5 (of 8, lacking i, ii and viii), 2-4 1 2 (bottom half of 4i torn away), 5 1 0 (of 12, ?lacking xi and xii), 6-7 1 2 , 8 1 0 , 9 1 0 (of 12, xi and xii cancelled blanks?), 10 6 , 11 1 0 , 12 8 , 13 9 (?of 1 0, lacking i), 14 8 (most of i lacking), 15 6 (of ?), defective at end, reused vellum strips reinforcing gutters, signature marks often surviving at foot of rectos of first half of gatherings 1-9; gatherings 1-9 single column, gatherings 10-15 of two columns, between 23 and 52 lines written in brown ink in several gothic cursive hands (a straight tear in one leaf, for losses see above). CONTEMPORARY LEATHER BINDING OVER WOODEN BOARDS, metal corner and central bosses, two pins and remains of straps from catches, with near contemporary vellum title-labels on upper cover, and later paper label with shelf-mark 100 on spine; front pastedown, 13th-century fragment of a manuscript on the intellectual faculties, concerning the faculties of 'estimatio' and 'memoria': back pastedown, 15th-century fragment listing the new moons between May and November (surface worn, lacking clasps and one boss, two holes from chain hasp). CONTENT: ff.1-20 Alphabetical subject index of sermons, under more than 1100 headings ff.21-94 Sermons on the Sunday epistles compiled by Dimaldutius or Damaldutius Foroliviensis of the Augustinian Hermits ('Incipiu[n]t s[er]mo[n]es sup[er] epistolas do[min]icales editi & [com]pilati a fr[atr]e demelducio de forlivio fr[atru]m he[remitarum] ordi[ni]s s[anc]ti Augusti'), beginning with the first sermon for the first Sunday in Advent ( Hora est .... Videns apostolus gloriosus , J.B. Schneyer, Wegweiser zu Lateinischen Predigtreihen des Mittelalters , 1965, p.323), and comprising three sermons each (four for Easter day) for the four Sundays of Advent, the Sundays in the octaves of Christmas and Epiphany (final sermon lacking end), the six Sundays in Lent and Easter Sunday, the first sermon for the first Sunday after Easter incomplete (apparently abandoned after 24 lines), altogether 40 sermons f.95 miscellaneous notes, including lists of the seven corporal alms and the seven spiritual alms ff.96-128 Treatise on the Lord's Prayer, in 11 parts ff.129-137v Treatise on the fourfold instinct, in 6 parts ff.137v-142 Treatise on the vices which disguise themselves as virtues (incomplete) The contents of the manuscript are accurately summarised in the contemporary labels to the upper cover, which indicate that the sermons of Dimaldutius were always incomplete in this copy, and also that further matter originally followed the conclusion of the treatise on vices: 'It[em] Sermones tiemelducii [ sic ] sup[er] ep[isto]las d[o]m[ini]cales p[er]adventu[m] & quadragesimam cu[m] sua bona tabula s[e]c[un]dum ordi[n]em alphabeti. Tractata p[re]dicabilis de or[aci]one d[o]m[ini]ca vz p[ate]r n[oste]r. Item tractatus de quadruplici instinctu p[re]dicabilis / Item tractata p[re]dicabilis de viciis subspe[cie] v[ir]tutum se palliantibus & occultantibus Item plura alia utilia notabilia'. The very full subject index to the sermons indicates that the collection in its original form covered the full cycle of the ecclesiastical year, although the copyist here evidently abandoned the work at the Sunday after Easter. The sermons have substantial contemporary annotations in parts, particularly the sermons for the 3rd Sunday in Lent and for Palm Sunday, indicating heavy early use. Dimaldutius was included by Josephus Pamphilus, Chronicis ordinis fratrum eremitarum S. Augustini , Rome 1581, who reported that he wrote treatises on the resurrection of the dead, the seven sacraments as well as other cycles of sermons: for the latter see Schneyer, Wegweiser... , pp.105, 115, 118, 264, 277, 333, 341, 381, 404 and 534.
