(McKerrow 133), full-page arms of the dedicatee, Sir Christopher Hatton, on title verso, ornamental headpieces and initials, full-page engraving by Van der Gucht of Cutler's Theatre mounted at beginning of second work. (Title border trimmed, title and upper margins, and second work dust-soiled, engraving partly detached without final blank leaf of second work.) 19th-century half black morocco, gilt spine (a little scuffed and soiled). Provenance : James Allen (signature on title and verso of engraving). FIRST EDITION. It contains the first edition in English of Celsus Maffeus's Dissuasoria . I: STC 6842. II: Wing G-275; Wellcome p.91. Third edition of Garth's satirical poem on the opponents of the dispensary established by the Royal College of Physicians. Editions after the first were 'considerably altered' (Grolier, Wither to Prior , 391). The second and third editions were augmented with a dedication to Anthony Henley, an introduction discussing the controversy, and commendatory poems.
