Beschreibung:

DIETTERLIN, Wendel (1550-1599). Architectura von Austheilung. Symmetria und Proportion der fünff Seulen. Nuremberg: Paulus Fürst, 1655. 5 parts in one volume, 2° (371 x 265mm). Etched general title, four section titles, portrait of the author, one half-page illustration and 192 plates only (of 195), by Dietterlin, a duplicate of plate numbered 147 loosely inserted. (Lacking plates numbered 119, 208 and 209, both copies of plate 147 cut-down and loosely inserted, text ff. 5 and 7 cut down and mounted on stubs, with larger duplicates loosely inserted, text fo. 23 cut-down and mounted, some browning and staining of margins, occasional small tears.) Contemporary blindstamped alum-tawed pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, panelled in blind, covers with central oval armorial stamp of Alfred, Abbot of Zweifalten, clasps (some scuffing, one clasp almost detached). Provenance : Alfred, Abbot of Zweifalten, near Württemburg (binding, inscription "Monasterii Zwifaltensis 1662", ?later stamp on title). Cf. Andersen II, pp.255-278; cf. Hollstein VI.17-18; cf. Fowler 105; cf. Fairfax Murray German 134. [ Bound with :] [W.DIETTERLIN?]. A collection of 29 etched architectural plates (numbered 1/2, 3-30), preceded by one leaf printed recto and verso with letterpress key to the plates, and dated Cologne, 1651. (Some marginal tears and soiling, plate numbered 17 with section of image neatly excised and tear into image, both neatly repaired.) The first work is a reprint of the first collected edition of 1598. Opinions on Dietterlin's work differ: "These designs are of great originality": (Fairfax Murray), "The plates depict the most fantastic designs in the most lurid taste which show, for the most part, no regard for the possibility of execution in any building material. Such designs had a disastrous effect on contemporary German, Flemish and English architectural detail": (Fowler). We have not been able to confirm the authorship of the second work, but the plates are stylistically very similar to Dietterlin.
